Latin name: Hercinothrips femoralis, Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis and Echinothrips americanus
Common name: Banded Greenhouse Thrip, Greenhouse Thrip and Black Thrip
Description: Thrips are slender and about 1/8" long. Their coloration is black to banded to nearly a translucent color. At times some are winged.
Hosts: We have only seen them on Ficus nitida, Golden Pothos and Chamaedorea palms.... but they can infect other plants
Life cycle: Eggs are laid on or in plant tissues. The egg to adult cycle takes 18 to 21 days.
Natural control: Natural control is difficult because the Thrip is embedded in  tightly curled leaves or deep in the shoot apex. Spray with Safer's Ultra Fine Oil  weekly until no sign of Thirp is present.
Chemical control: Add systemic to soil such as Marathon. Spray with Orthene or any pesticide labeled for Thrip. As with any chemical be sure to follow label directions and wear the appropriate saftey equipment.
