White
Fly is another insect that we see very little of at Plant Ranch.
Occasionally they will come in on a shipment of Hibiscus, Crown of Thorn
or Euphorbia Trigona.
| Latin name: |
Trialeurodes vaporariorum |
| Common name: |
White Fly |
| Description: |
Adults are approximately
1/25" long with white wings and body parts. |
| Hosts: |
We have only seen White
Fly on Hibiscus, Crown of Thorn and Euphorbia trigona. They are
can be found on spring flowering plants. |
| Life cycle: |
The female White Fly will
begin laying about 100 eggs 2 days after birth. The eggs will take
approximately 10 days to hatch into crawlers. In about 10 days
these crawlers will become adults. Their entire life cycle last 3
weeks. |
| Natural control: |
White fly on a small scale
are not that difficult to control. Start by taking the plant
outdoors and shake the heck out of it and quickly move to another
location. Next spray with Safer's Ultra Fine oil. The oil seems to
glue most of the remaining White flies to the plant. Repeat this
process weekly until all White flies are gone. |
| Chemical control: |
I have had great success
using Safer's Ultra Fine or Oil sprays. Vactsol detergent soap
also works well. All of these products seem to glue up their
bodies. Add systemic insecticide the soil. Always follow label
directions and wear appropriate safety equipment. |
